Twitter as an Organic Marketing Tool and Celebrating a Milestone

twitter1000Twitter can be a bit intimidating.  Most of us are scared to type that first tweet and our fingers freeze on the keyboard.  What do we say?  It’s a common fear that no one out there is interested in what we have to say.  We all feel this way, so here is a simple equation for using Twitter as a social media outlet and organic marketing tool:

Twitter Success = 1/4 Socializing + 1/4 Promoting Others + 1/4 Promoting Our Products + 1/4 Provide Information

1/4 Socialize – interact with others, chat as if you have known them all along.  Tweet about favorite topics such as television, movies, books, sports, recipes, and vacations.  Join groups and popular hashtags (#).

Think of a hashtag as a chat room, only on Twitter.  This is where strangers can interact with one another and discuss topics of similar interest.

1/4 Promote Others – encourage others, cheer them on, and RT (retweet) their blog posts and some of their favorite messages that we also enjoy.  Have they recently released a book, reached a milestone, or received a new rave review?  Tweet it!  Have they shared the most recent breaking news in the world of technology?  Tweet it!

1/4 Promote Our Products – Do we have a blog?  Tweet recently published posts.  Do we have a self published e-book on the market?  Tweet links to our personal websites where the Kindle, Nook, and i-Pad conversions are available for purchase.  Have we recently shared exciting news via a Press Release?  Tweet it!  Are we offering a promotion or a special price or giveaway?  Tweet it!

1/4 Provide Useful Information – One of the hot new social media outlets today is Google+.  We absolutely love keeping up with technology news via this platform.  Every time we see an interesting article that we feel others will find beneficial, we tweet it!  It’s that simple!  Odds are that if one person finds the article useful, someone else will as well.

By following this simple equation, we’ve recently hit 1,000 organic followers on Twitter.  What does organic mean?  That means we didn’t pay a service for a certain amount of “friends.”  Instead, we’ve reached out to the Twitterverse and attracted people who actually care what we have to say and are interested in our company.  That’s organic marketing at its finest.

Hot Topic – What Makes Self-Publishing So Appealing? Part 5

Over the past month, we have discussed the number one reason why writers today choose self-publishing over and over again – CONTROL.

Via self-publishing, writers control book titles, book covers, book content (story and words), publishing, copyrights, and promotion.

We spend countless hours in front of the computer and our notebooks researching, writing, and editing our manuscripts to perfection.  We work through blood, sweat, and tears, until we fall in love with every aspect of our stories.

By taking CONTROL, we announce to the world that we are not only the author, but the publisher, agent, and promoter as well.

Many of us didn’t go to school to study business and or marketing, while some of us might have.  Many of us don’t have the first clue as to how to promote our products.  Heck, many of us aren’t even that comfortable with promoting ourselves.

But we can; we can do it.

Last week we suggested that one of the most important pages for an author to create in order to promote his or her book is an Author Website.

This website will serve as the primary launch pad for selling our e-books.  We can create different pages on this website for different aspects of our writing: a home page, including our book cover/s and blurb/s; an author page, including biography and head shot; a blog page, linking back to our blogs if we have one; and perhaps even a shopping cart page.  The author website makes it possible to sell all e-book versions in one location; after all, it’s important to have a central location for readers to find information about our books.

Okay, so what do we do now?

One way writers promote their books is by launching a blog tour.  With a blog tour, others in the blogosphere read and review books for their followers.  Some tours consist solely of book reviews, while others interview the author about their stories, characters, and general motivations behind telling their particular story.  Most authors like to offer their products to the reviewer for free, and sometimes even like to extend discounts to the reviewer’s readers.

We asked star client, Jillian Dodd, what she likes most about using her author website and here is what she had to say:

“The big thing I love about my author website is the ability to give my reviewers a coupon code linked to my Digital Content Center shopping cart instead of emailing a copy directly to the reviewer.  When we email copies, e-books usually aren’t digitally protected.  However, by giving the reviewer a coupon code to my author website, the digital rights of my story are still protected.

“This coupon code also allows the reviewer to grab a copy of my book in whichever format they prefer – Kindle, Nook, i-Books, and even .PDF.   With the DCC shopping cart service, there is a digital stamp created to help discourage file uploading to share sites.

“Clearly this method seems much more professional and I control the sharing of my work.”

Jillian saw much success with her That Boy Blog Tour earlier this year, and we wish her continued success with her sequel, That Wedding.  Her experiences have been crucial to our CONTROL blog series, and we can’t thank her enough.

To learn more about Jillian, her books, or just to simply check out her author website, click here.

And now…

Now we’re ready.  We’re ready to convert.  We’re ready to self-publish.  We’re ready to promote.  We’re ready to take CONTROL of our story.

Want to take control of your story?

Hot Topic: Pinterest, Part 3 – Is Pinterest a Viable Option for Businesses?

Last week, we discussed how writers use Pinterest to promote and sell their e-books.  Pinterest has proven to be a great way to meet new people — people we may not have met otherwise.  And over the past few months, it appears that Pinterest is assisting in more referrals than Facebook, Google+, and other social media sites combined.

But is using Pinterest a viable option for other industries?

We keep hearing that Pinterest drives a ton of traffic to retailers.  That all sounds great, but how does Pinterest drive said traffic?

For example, Jenny Joe June pins a picture of her new hair-thinga-ma-jiggy that she received for Christmas.  On her pinboard, she writes about how she can’t live without her new accessory and explains exactly how to use it.

The picture and the “how to” instruction manual that Jenny Joe June provides is just what girls across America needed to know to help them determine whether or not they need this very same hair-thinga-ma-jiggy.  Next thing we know, thousands of girls are online and googling the home page of the hair-thinga-ma-jiggy’s main site so they too can purchase one.

This makes sense, right? What if we want Pinterest to drive traffic directly to our website where we sell evolving content?

Let’s say Mary May Moose is starting a new photography business and she has a plethora of pictures already available for purchase on her personal website, courtesy of Digital Content Center.

What does she need to do next and how can Pinterest help?

First of all, Mary May Moose needs to set up a Pinterest account.  Next, she wants to display (pin and create boards) a variety of some of her best and most colorful work.  Remember – most people are visual. Next, she wants to include her sale prices for the photos; otherwise, how will the viewers visiting her Pinterest page know that the pictures are for sale?

**But similar to all social networking sites, we must remember to interact.  Like Twitter’s “unsaid rule” of providing valuable content (okay, so it’s been said over and over just how important it is to provide valuable content on Twitter and to not just self-promote), engaging with the Pinterest community is a must to promote our businesses.**

Once Mary May Moose’s Pinterest page is set up, her photographs are priced, and she begins interacting with the Pinterest community, she can just sit back and watch as her evolving digital downloads (also known as her pictures) begin to sell left and right.

So what do we say: is Pinterest a viable social networking site for industries other than writing?

Yes!  We think so.

Hot Topic: Pinterest, Part 2: Is Pinterest Viable for Writers?

Last week, we introduced the new social sharing site, Pinterest, at a very elementary level because we like so many are intrigued by its rapid growth but didn’t know much about it.  While we’re no experts ourselves, we have seen numerous instances where others out in cyberspace view the pinboards of Pinterest as a valued asset to grow their businesses.

So we decided to take a look and investigate: is Pinterest a viable option for businesses, particularly for self-published writers?

For example, many writers on Pinterest set up inspirational boards for their stories.  By “inspirational,” we mean photos of people and locations that literally inspired them while drafting or writing.

How does this help?

Most people are visual and while many already picture the characters and settings as they read a story, seeing actual photographs on a writer’s inspirational pinboard can clarify such images in the writer’s book for the reader.  These photos can also entice someone else who just happens upon a writer’s Pinterest page who may not have previously been familiar with the author’s work to begin with.

The main love interest in Story A resembles Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries?  I want to read that!”

Another way writers can promote their work is by including a blog Hall of Fame pinboard on their Pinterest page.

How does this help?

In the instances that a writer has blogged about his or her story (excerpts, background in the form of unpublished prologues, novellas, etc.), a potential reader now has more information at their fingertips to help determine whether or not he or she would be interested in said story.  Not only that, but a blog could potentially pick up more followers by posting blog pins on a Pinterest page.

“Did you see that blog Hall of Fame posting over at Writer B’s Pinterest Page?  I need to follow that blog…  Oh, and she has a book out?  Sweet!  I like her writing style.”

But probably the biggest advantage behind social media’s latest sensation is the fact that Pinterest is a great way to meet new people – people we may not have met otherwise – people who may turn around and buy our e-book.

It’s even quite possible that Pinterest is assisting in more referrals than Facebook, Google+, and other social media and networking sites combined.

So what do we say: is Pinterest a viable social networking site for writers?

Yes!  We think so.
